What Is Pilates
As developed by Joseph Pilates, Pilates is an exercise regimen that focuses on conditioning your core and heightening your awareness of your own body. Pilates is a lifestyle of fitness and health that builds strength and awareness using controlled movements, executed with precision, along with proper breathing techniques.
Pilates is a great workout that leaves you feeling satisfied, calm, and in control of every muscle in your body. As your core becomes stronger, you will experience the wonderful lifting and lengthening of your body as you work out the compression that comes with the stress and strain of our harsh daily environment.
Practicing the Pilates Method can lengthen and stretch all the major muscle groups in the body, which improves muscle elasticity and joint mobility. Greater flexibility and strength in your core helps you perform better during regular daily activities and sports, and it can decrease your chance of injury.
Regular Pilates practice helps you become acutely in tune with your body, because during each session we emphasize proper breathing, correct spinal and pelvic alignment, and concentrating on smooth, flowing movement. You will actually learn how to control the way your body moves, and to execute movements with efficiency.
Pilates is often used in physical therapy situations to rehabilitate injuries, because the exercises are performed in reclining or sitting positions, and most are low impact and partially weight bearing. This makes it an extremely effective practice for folks who are trying to maintain good health as they age.
Pilates is a very flexible exercise regimen that allows for modifications to the exercises to accommodate practitioners of different skill levels. It is designed for the intensity to increase as your body conditioning improves.
